Here, you'll have an opportunity to see rare and indigenous plants, unusual geological formations and a variety of native wildlife. The trails range in difficulty from easy to strenuous. Whether you want a leisurely stroll, a challenging hike or something fun and interactive for the kids, Chimney Rock Park has the perfect trail for you. Most trails are open all year, weather permitting.

Chimney Rock Park - located 25 miles southeast of Asheville - gives you the opportunity to explore and experience nature's wonders up close and personal. From unique geological formations to sweeping views, you'll find the best of the mountains in one place at Chimney Rock Park.

~ Skyline-Cliff Trail - Sheer cliffs, breathtaking views, and the dramatic plunge of a waterfall just a few of the fascinating sights along the Skyline-Cliff Trail Loop. This one-and-a-half to two-hour, moderately strenuous hike courses through lush woodland and across natural cliffs and ledges on its way to such geologic spectacles as the 2,280-foot-high top of the Chimney, the remarkable overhang and panoramic vistas at Opera Box and the highest point in the Park, 2,480-foot-tall Exclamation Point (whose name speaks for itself!)

~ Hickory Nut Falls Trail - This .75-mile trail offers a leisurely walk that's chock-full of wonder! Hardwood forests of oak, hickory, maple and basswood harbor abundant plant life, including rare and endangered wildflowers and old favorites such as Jack-in-the-pulpit and Solomon's-seal. Listen and look for the resident and migrant birds that take cover high above in the forest's canopy. Cross the bridge and you're near the grand finale: Hickory Nut Falls, all 404 feet of it! Dainty white blossoms of Lady rue and grassy fronds of Deerhair bulrush thrive in the waterfall's mist.

~ Four Seasons Trail - This .6-mile, moderate-to-strenuous trail starts above the Meadows to provide you access to the top of the mountain year-round without driving. It wends through hardwood trees, thickets of Carolina rhododendron and mountain laurel and abundant wildflowers and indigenous plants, some species not found along the Park's other three miles of trails. You may even spot deer and wild turkeys.

~ Outcroppings Trail - As an option to the elevator, or if you have your pet, take this network of stairs and boardwalks either to or from the Chimney level. Choose your path of adventure - thread your way through the Needle's Eye, duck through the Subway, cross the bridge from Pulpit Rock to the Rock Pile, or venture out on the Spiral Staircase.

~ Great Woodland Adventure - Kids and kids-at-heart will love this easy .6-mile trail. Woodland critters take the spotlight at 12 discovery stations along the winding trail. Grady the Groundhog, the Park's mascot, illustrates how his forest friends live, including chipmunks, frogs, owls and butterflies. Try to jump as far as a spider, spot the salamanders, or name the birds of prey soaring above. Larger-than-life sculptures bring the trail to life. The Park's 32-foot climbing tower and Grady's Gear are located next to the trailhead.

Insider Tips:

~ Hydrate and re-fuel often. Bring extra water to stay hydrated along the trails. There are no potable water sources along the trail. You can purchase bottled water in the Sky Lounge and at Moonshiner's Cave. Pack a snack or a picnic lunch to keep you going. Picnic tables are located along the road and hiking trails. You can also eat in the Sky Lounge Deli or at the Old Rock Café. Both restaurants can make you a Hiker's Lunch to take with you.
~ Wear comfortable shoes made for hiking or walking. The trails in the Park are maintained but are naturally rugged. This can make for unsure footing if you wear inappropriate shoes such as flip-flops, sandals, heels or slides.
~ Mountain weather can be very unpredictable. Even in the summer, mornings and nights can be chilly. And, it can be sunny on one ridge and raining on the next ridge over. When choosing what to wear, prepare for the worst and hope for the best! Dress in layers and bring your rain jacket.

Notes:

~ Pet Policy: Dogs are welcome to hike the trails at the Park. Just keep them on a leash and clean up after them. They are not allowed on the elevator or in the Sky Lounge due to State Health Laws. Be prepared to hike and get some exercise with your pooch!
~ The views are accessible to everyone! The Park is wheelchair accessible except for the Chimney and trails. Wheelchairs and handicapped parking are available.
~ Strollers are not recommended on the trails.
~ There are no restrooms on the trails. Make sure you take advantage of the restrooms located in the Meadows, the upper parking lot and the Sky Lounge before heading out.
~ No walking or biking is allowed on the road up the mountain because it's curvy and narrow. Please drive safely.
